For my second Genius Hour, I decided to make research about talents and what many people take them to be. I chose this topic because it is something part of everyone’s life and I also wanted to change and do something totally different from my first genius hour which was about Mars. Unlike my first genius hour, the second was more like everyday life and included everyone which is mainly why I chose it. I took time making researches but mostly by asking my schoolmates and some people on twitter who have different talents like writers and painters. I mostly asked them how they were able to discover their talents and what they take talents to be or what most people around them take them to be. Most of them said that they discovered their talents when they were little and were able to keep it going because of the inspiration from their parents, siblings or even teachers.
The answers I got were almost the same except those from Alice Luetchford who said that most people take talents to be things that make you famous and bring you income and she also gave me an example that kindness is also a talent but many people don’t think of it that way because it neither makes you famous nor gives you money. Her ideas were new to me and though I had never thought of it, when I did, I discovered that it was so true. Making different researches helped me to get ideas from different people and got a feeling of success when I got an idea I had never thought of. Personally, I learnt a lot from this project and the most important thing I learnt was that a talent is not all about how people appreciate what you do, but how you do it willingly and how you use it to help others. I also read some articles which made me know that there are some talents, though undermined by most people are more important than what can make you famous like the talent of kindness or happiness.
Comparing the second genius hour to the first one, the second was a lot better because I took my time to ask my friends since they all had different talents and others did not even know their talents but the first Genius Hour, all I did was internet research because there was no way to ask my friends about their perspectives since it is not something part of their life and most of them did not know much about the Mars.
Connecting with people on twitter from my project is also another knew thing I did for my second Genius Hour and I think my second topic was more interesting and even before the presentation, I had more confidence than the first one because it was something I already knew about and all I had to do was to add some few new learnt details. What I learnt from my genius hour helped me as well as my classmates especially those who did not know yet what their talents were that no talent should be undermined and that whatever you are good at, whether other people like it or not, you should keep working on it and look forward to make it the best.
The second thing I learnt is that a talent is not what people think you can do, but what you feel you can do and feel you want to put all your effort in doing it. For my next Genius Hour, I want to make research about social media.I want to include how social media has changed from time to time, both positively and negatively and also get to show people whether social media was better the time it was introduced or not.
